How to Find Out Who That Actor Is (While You're Watching)

Updated 2026-11-02

You're halfway through an episode and a familiar face walks on screen. You know them. The name just won't come. If it's a lead actor, it takes a few seconds to look up. If it's a supporting or one-episode role, it can eat your whole evening. Here are five ways to find out, from quickest to most thorough.

1. Search the title + "cast"

Search Google for "[show name] cast" and you'll usually get a row of photos with character names.

Tip: if you caught the character's name, search "[show name] [character name]". It's much faster than scrolling a cast list.

2. Check your streaming app

Netflix, Disney+, Max, Apple TV and others list cast on the title's detail page — but usually only the top few names.

One exception stands out: Prime Video's X-Ray. Pause the video and it shows the actors in the current scene. Not every title supports it, but when it does, it's the most precise option there is.

3. Use IMDb's full cast list

IMDb's "Full Cast & Crew" page is the most complete list you'll find, often down to one-line roles with character names. The catch: it can be long, and if you only know the face you'll be clicking through profiles one by one.

4. Ask a community

Post a screenshot and ask. Subreddits like r/tipofmytongue are surprisingly good at this. The downside is obvious: you have to wait for someone to answer.

5. Snap the screen and search by face

When you don't know the title, the character, or anything except the face, the fastest route is to search by the face itself. That's why we built who are you again? — point your iPhone at the TV, snap, and you'll see who it is plus their best-known roles.

To be honest, very new or little-known actors may not be found yet. A search that comes up empty never uses one of your free searches.
